The aftermaths of the party tsunami called Distortion is bound to piss some people off. Copenhagen city officials and residents have been voicing their concerns over the amount of rubbish left behind by revellers. And of cause the problems with excessive amounts of garbage and the stench of piss must be adressed. But there should be an equal focus on how the festival contributes to the Copenhagen life and culture. With all its pop-up events in off-beat locations like bridges, boats, busses, backyards, bungalows and beaches it’s a genuine space activator, it’s a celebration of urban life and it emphasizes values such as openness, entrepreneurial initiative, tolerance and diversity. The police has even confirmed that the days of Distortion were much less violent than a normal weekend.
A party is a party – and I have never been at a fun party that diden’t leave things in a bit of a mess – have you?
