IN LOVING MEMORY OF A MORNING RUN

Running this morning I decided to divert from my usual route through Clissold Park. Running down Church Street I found the entrance to the enchanting Abney Park Cemetery. I’ll recommend taking a stroll there and watch how nature takes its course.

Perfect light, nice sunday, new friend. Word to mother: aLLriGhT!

FOOD WASTE

Enough food to fill 11,720 double-decker buses or the Albert Hall 15 times over is chucked out in London every year.

It is estimated the average family wastes 50 each month by throwing out unused but edible food.

To raise awareness of the financial impact of throwing away food and encourage less waste, the Feed the 5.000 event took place friday.

It provided free lunch for 5,000 people using food that would otherwise have gone to waste such as fruit and vegetables which may not live up to the requirements of the super markets but is still perfectly edible.

Pretty good rice and curry.

FAMILIAR FACE

My first computer generated doodle. There’s a first for everything… but fortunately today I’ve stocked up on art supplies. Found this great art shop in Angel, so perfect, that my little designer heart skipped a beat or two.

ASSUMPTION IS THE MOTHER OF ALL FUCK-UPS

I’m not really pro…. or against for that matter…. but the conclusion after watching the videos documenting Shephard Fairey’s activities in Copenhagen must be “assumption is the mother of all fuck-ups”, and even though I really dig his art, I can’t help thinking that he comes off a bit naive, arrogant, full of himself and, just, err, American! I found the full set of videos here.  There are four parts, I chose the one with the 69 wall painting time-lapse video, and the discussions with people from the former Youth House.

PORTRAIT OF MY SISTER

I really miss my little sister. Here’s a portrait of her I did some years ago. She pretty, no?

EVERYBODY SLEEPS

The saying “Sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite” has a whole new meaning after viewing the photo project by James Morrison. As much as the project is about the quirkiness of childhood, it is, more strikingly, a commentary on class and on poverty. But the diversity also provides a sense of togetherness.

Everybody sleeps. And eventually, everybody grows up.

STOP MOTION WITHIN A STOP MOTION

500 people holding developed pictures all around Israel, creating a smooth music video within their hands.

MEDICINE, MIRACLES AND CHARMS

Sunday the sky was blue, the sun was shining and after a week with all the possible nuances of grey, I wanted to get out and about and find some color in the city. I found this gem of a museum called the Wellcome Collection. It’s a curious blend of history, art and science. The museum currently has 3 exhibitions on display: Medicine Man, Medicine Now and Miracles and Charms. Here are some pics. Felicity Powell’s artwork and time-lapse videos were especially intriguing. The Wellcome Collection is a free experience for the incurably curious, and I soo fall into that category!

NEW FACES

A peak into my sketch book.

STICKY

Timelapse video showing how 156 rolls of sticky tape are used to construct a one-day installation as a backdrop for the ceremony at the Design Museum. When I see this, it gets me thinking of the giant she-spider in Lord of the Rings. It looks like a hobbit trap to me, but it’s a facinating idea to explore the properties of sticky tape to this extent.

SKATE HOUSE

Traditionally skateboarding adapts objects and conditions originally created for other functions. This house is based on the opposite principle. The Malibu dream house is shaped like a flattened tube, with walls that curve into the ceiling, making every surface fully skateable or grindable. Even the furniture is fair game. All of the traditional living functions such as dining and lounge area merge with the curves and the looping structure creates continuity with the outside skateable landscape.

THUNDERSTRUCK ! THE ALL GIRL MARCHING BAND FROM HELL

Yesterday I went to the mini festival ‘Stop op – festival for all’ – a counter reaction to the larger music event START,  which takes place in Kødbyen, Copenhagen. The organizers of the START festival wanted the nearby Café for drug addicts to close down during the event since they diden’t want drug users around. This was when the workers and volunteers of the café took the initiative to organize a small counter festival, open for everyone and with free music and food. There was grillin’, chillin’, and dj’ing – and the absolute highlight: A visit from the all girl marching band from hell, playing heavy rock on kazoo, dressed in leatherwest, miniskirts and wicked whiskey-infused choreography. A sight for sore eyes. These images is zapped from their Pigegarden myspace account – it’s their performance at Roskilde Festival 07.

THE PITCH – DESIGN EXPLAINED TO NON-CREATIVES

I found this project at Kickstarter I like the idea of inviting outsiders into the design process and present to them the creative thrills as well as hardships of the field. Here’s what the inventor has to say about the objective and the solution:

Objective:
Communicate the premise of graphic design and make it accessible to everyone, especially non-creatives, and create a product that helps us form a community, collaborate, and invent, exactly what I believe design intends to do.

Solution:
Create the game of graphic design. A game that allows everyone, not just designers or creatives, but your younger brother, your grandma who can’t click a computer mouse or your best friend who’s an economics major, to better understand and engage in the creative process.
